Theo Paphitis – Small Business Sunday Club
Small Business Sunday was created by Theo Paphitis in October 2010. Theo is best known for appearing on Dragons’ Den on BBC Two. He is Chairman of Ryman Stationery plus Boux Avenue lingerie, Robert Dyas and latest acquisition London Graphic Centre.
Each week, Theo rewards small businesses that tweet him @inksmudgejournals.comTheoPaphitis and describe their businesses in one tweet including the all-important hashtag #SBS.
Theo reviews and chooses his favourite lucky six who are then re-tweeted. As he has over 500,000 followers, this provides a massive boost to the chosen lucky businesses. They are also invited to a huge event held every year where they get to meet Theo and listen to invaluable talks from industry leading speakers.
Theo says “My vision is that everyone who has ever won an #SBS re-tweet from me becomes part of a friendly club. Like-minded individuals can share successes and learnings.”
I won a place in this club in November 2018 after being told about the opportunity by Kate Chesters and attended my first event in February 2019. To date 370,000 small business owners have applied but only 1% have been successful in gaining a place.
#SBS Event 2019
The day started with a talk from Kypros Kyprianou the CEO of Theo Paphitis Retail Group who opened the event and introduced the sponsors and of course the star of the show Theo!
Theo then introduced us to Raja Saggi, the Head of SME Marketing at Google U.K. & Ireland who gave a talk on how we can use Google’s products and services to help grow our small businesses.
Some of these tips include using the following website:
You can view his whole presentation here on SlideShare here.
After a quick lunch break Theo then introduced us to Sir Tom Hunter who inspired every person in the room with his rags to riches talk. I have no doubt that I will remember this talk for years to come.
We then had the opportunity to get a professional head shot done that was sponsored by HP. Which of course I made sure I got my journal in the shot!
I then collected my certificate and had my picture taken with Theo. I was so nervous an enthralled that he actually took my InkSmudge Journal from me and said that he would hold it for the picture. THEO HELD MY JOURNAL!!
After I picked myself up, I then went to collect my goodie bag which was jam packed full of pens and useful gadgets like a power bank and phone holder!
All in all it was an amazing day and I am so looking forward to attending it again next year. Knowing that my business will grow from strength to strength in the meantime, I will be able to look back at this time and see how far I have come.
